Combine a sporty mountain bike tour with a fantastic panoramic mountain!
A very scenic and physically demanding mountain bike tour, as it is part of the multi-day Trans National Park Route. The views of the Tote Gebirge and the large and small Pyhrgas mountains make up for the effort.
From the Wasserklotz you can enjoy an extraordinary 360° view of the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Ancient Beech Forests and the surrounding mountains.
First follow the signs for the Trans National Park Route in Windischgarsten: just before the Hotel Dilly, this leads left towards Edlbach, past the golf course and sharply left up to Mitterweng. Follow the MTB1 signs here towards Schwarzkogel. Pass the Dambach Ursprung and continue into a valley, the Innerrosenau. There the route takes a sharp right up the mountain towards Egglalm. This is a SCHIEBESTRECKE!!! Please always close the pasture gates! From the serviced Egglalm, it is then a relaxed walk of just a few minutes to the changing station at the Hengstpasshütte National Park. There you can enjoy a hike to the Wasserklotz, one of the most beautiful panoramic mountains in the Kalkalpen National Park.
The best way back is via the Hengstpass country road back to Windischgarsten.
Tip: Sporty mountain bikers with stamina can also cycle via the Zickerreith and Dörflmoaralm to the Hanslalm and via the Langfirst route (MTB5) to the Haslersgatter. From here it's a steep descent to the Wurbauerkogel and on to the Hengstpass country road to Windischgarsten.
For the bike tour from Windischgarsten via the Trans National Park Route, add approx. 3.5 hours | approx. 25 km | approx. 965 metres in altitude to the tour details given.
The return journey via the Hengstpass country road to Windischgarsten is mostly downhill.
HIKE:
You hike via the managed alpine pastures of Spitzenberg and Zickerreith up to Kreuzau, which is also managed. Continue along the forest road to Dörflmoaralm, where you turn right towards Ahornsattel. A forest path leads you in steep hairpin bends to the summit of the Wasserklotz and rewards you with a fantastic view of the beech forests of the Kalkalpen National Park and the rugged rock faces of the Haller Mauern. On a clear day, you can see 54 two-thousand metre peaks from the summit.
From the summit, you can descend along trail no. 475A to the Ahornsattel, then take the same route back to the "Hengstpasshütte" changing station.
Walking time Hengstpasshütte - Wasserklotz approx. 2.5 hours.
Easy mountain hike on forest roads and good paths, but surefootedness and a head for heights are required in the summit area!
Tip: If you feel like it, take a detour from the Ahornsattel to the picturesque Siebenbrünn springs. To do this, walk 15 minutes further in the direction of Blahbergalm.
By car: via the A9 (Roßleithen/Windischgarsten exit) or B138 (Windischgarsten Nord junction) to the parking lot at the sports field (free parking).
By train: Windischgarsten train station (without your own bike) or Roßleithen (with your own bike).
Bike rental: Bike Center Pyhrn-Priel and Bikes & Wheels Experience in Windischgarsten.
