Gustav Mahler's works bear witness to a man who was searching for answers to life's big questions. Born into a Jewish family, baptized a Catholic as an adult and a lifelong reader of Buddhist-inspired literature, the composer encountered religious teachings in many forms. Mahler's quest was not based on orthodox beliefs, however, but on a deeply spiritual outlook. This was based on the role of the artist - especially music - as a basis for insights into the essence of existence.
