Erika Pluhar
Erika Pluhar was born in 1939. After completing high school and the acting school "Max Reinhardt Seminar", she was engaged at the Vienna Burgtheater, where she was successfully active as a protagonist for four decades. She also made a name for herself in the entire German-speaking area through film and television.
At the age of 40, she began to work musically, became an interpreter of her own songs, and simultaneously regularly published books.
At the age of 60, she completely withdrew from pure acting. She worked in film (writing, directing, producing), produced her own recordings, and has continued to perform in concerts and readings, consistently representing her own content. As a writer, she publishes books that are also purchased and have secured her a loyal readership, which her publisher appreciates. For some time now, it has been Residenz Verlag – the latest releases: “Die öffentlicher Frau”, 2013, and “Gegenüber”, 2016. Typically, the hardcover editions by Suhrkamp-Insel are transferred to paperback.
Erika Pluhar gives lectures, expresses herself politically, and, without ever being fully part of a "scene," remains publicly active as a musician, writer, and political commentator.

Raising the Voice: On Culture, Politics, and Life
The most important speeches and essays of the wonderful author in one volume.
If she already possesses a voice that stands out to many for its timbre, may it also be audible in another sense: as the voice of an author and "person of public interest" that Erika Pluhar has become throughout her life. Whether regarding her personal stance on political issues, socio-political matters, or honoring or bidding farewell to contemporaries she loved – Erika Pluhar repeatedly wrote speeches, essays, and articles, was interviewed, and responded, or spoke out when she felt it necessary.

August Schmölzer

In 2023, trained chef and actor August Schmölzer, known for his numerous works in theater, film, and television, made his novel debut with “At the End, Everything Becomes Visible”. In this book, which served as a novel template for the film of the same name, Schmölzer takes a keen look at those people wounded by war, hatred, and coldness. In his second book “Homeland”, which will be published in October 2024, the author deals with his experiences, longings, and injuries related to home. August Schmölzer will also read from this book at the Autumn Reading.

At the End, Everything Becomes Visible

Josef returns to the city of his childhood after many years. A long life of wandering lies behind him, as he had enlisted as a war correspondent in the military, inspired by the hurrah-patriotism of his surroundings, and had to photograph the horrors of war. In the gloomy place of his childhood, he wants to find peace, working as a gravedigger, but soon realizes that the wicked ghosts of the past still haunt the minds of the people.
Josef wants to stay out of it all, tends to the cemetery, and confronts Michael's questions – about personal guilt through omission, about courage or cowardice, about powerlessness in the face of overwhelming injustice. Do these conversations heal Josef's wounded soul? Josef is now ready for a new-old love …

Homeland

In St. Vincent in southwestern Styria, the lives of the people are characterized by agriculture and church. The residents confront the oppressive weight of the past and challenge the harsh everyday life with courage and humor; small mishaps turn into enormous challenges, and great problems resolve unexpectedly simply.
Surrounding the old farmer Franziska Klug and the retired gendarme Josef Sudi, August Schmölzer tells a captivating story about life, love, and overcoming obstacles. And that greatness can emerge even from the small.

Music

The string quartet Sonare will musically frame the evening.
