What is T³?
T³ - The abbreviation: The abbreviation T³ (i.e. T to the power of 3, pronounced Teh-Three *g*) is short for T*T*T in maths. The three 'T's stand for the 'T's in "TableTop Tournaments".
Tabletop games are strategy games in which two or more players compete with miniature figures on a "tabletop". In contrast to other board games, the term tabletop is to be taken literally here, as most games are delivered without a playing field.
How do you play tabletop?
Each game system has different rules, just like you are used to from board games. Every tabletop game comes with a rule book or rule sheet. This contains all the information about the figures, the layout of the playing field and the course of a game. These rules describe, for example
- How (far) a figure moves on the playing field.
- How a character interacts with objects or opponents.
- The order in which players activate pieces.
- When and how a game ends.
- There are many similarities between the different game systems, which makes learning other tabletop games quite easy.
Other special features of tabletop
- Most players bring their own figures to the game, as is usual in deck-building card games.
- Before the game, each player draws up a so-called list, which consists of a large number of units from the rulebook. The list is not only the basis of your own strategy, but also serves as a packing list for the playing pieces.
- Most players keep the exact composition of the list a secret. The entire list is only revealed at the game table. This is to prevent the opponents from creating "anti-lists".
- Lists change over time, which is also related to the joint manoeuvre critique after the game. As in a football match, the players talk openly about successful moves, but also about the strengths and weaknesses of their own lists.
Successful lists from the tournament scene form the so-called meta.
- Rulebooks for international titles predominantly contain imperial units of measurement, such as inches or feet, because many games originate from the British "Lead Belt", in the centre of which lies the city of Nottingham. Some of the biggest manufacturers in the world have set up shop there. These include Games Workshop (Warhammer, Age of Sigmar) and Warlord Games (Bolt Action, Black Powder).
