In Christianity, Good Friday is the first day of the so-called "Triduum Sacrum", the three-day celebration of Easter. On Good Friday, Christians commemorate the crucifixion of Jesus Christ in the form of a church service. The name of the holiday is derived from the Old High German term "kara", which means "mourning" or "lamentation".
In Protestant churches, the tradition of not ringing the church bells on this day is also practised in many places. In Protestant churches (as well as in Catholic churches), altar decorations such as candles or flowers are often not used. According to Protestant tradition, the liturgical colour of the day is black or purple.
