St Jacob's parish church



Consecrated in 1140, rebuilt after the town fire of 1353 by the St Jacob's building yard. Partially destroyed in the town fire of 1504. Tower: foundation stone laid in 1470; tower over gallery 1721/1726; dome 1778/1781. Reconstruction and partial remodelling after the collapse of the southern nave (1851/1855). Predominantly neo-Gothic furnishings; large number of high-quality epitaphs.

Franz Xaver Gruber, the creator of the world-famous Silent Night song, received his basic musical training from 1805 to 1806 in the Burghausen parish church of St Jakob and learnt to play the organ in the sacristan's house.
