Georgskirche Puchheim

Attnang-Puchheim, Oberösterreich, Österreich

The former castle chapel now serves as a baptistery and also provides space for smaller wedding ceremonies.

Weekday services (Mon-Fri 7:30 am) and Eucharistic adoration (Mon-Fri 8:00 am-6:00 pm) are also held here.

The former castle church, which was built more than 750 years ago, was dedicated to St. George. However, it was destroyed in a major fire in 1585. Remains were found during renovation work in 1983. After the fire, the then Protestant owners had the castle and chapel rebuilt. The Catholic Imperial Count of Salburg, Gotthard Heinrich, gave St. George's Church its familiar appearance. At the time, St. George's Church was only of local importance with access via the castle. Maximilian I built a public entrance with a porch, which is known today as the Bildergang. It got its name from the many votive images donated by the faithful in thanksgiving for the answer to their prayers.
