The beautiful and charming excursion destination of Altenberg, which lies on a southern foothill of the Mühlviertel highlands in beautiful surroundings, is known as the "balcony of Linz" due to its 593 metre-high ballustrade-like location and its far-reaching views. Altenberg offers a panoramic view of the Mühlviertel as well as across the provincial capital of Linz into the centre of Upper Austria as far as the foothills of the Northern Limestone Alps.
In addition to the advantage of its proximity to the provincial capital Linz (approx. 8 km), Altenberg also offers the tranquillity, ambience and flair of a rural community. In addition to the wide range of sporting activities on offer in the municipality of Altenberg, you can also take advantage of the diverse cultural programme on offer in Linz, which is "on the doorstep" so to speak.
Neolithic artefacts bear witness to the fact that our region was at least occasionally inhabited by a nomadic hunting and gathering population. The Celtic Bojer and Narister tribes settled here in pre-Christian times. After the turmoil of the migration of peoples and the Avar invasions, the Slavs are thought to have settled here from the Gallneukirchen basin in the 8th century. The Slavic roots of the village names Weitrag and Kulm are a reminder of this. In the 9th century, the Bavarian settlers arrived with the first wave of colonisation. The village name Bayring from this period indicates the ethnicity of the villagers. During this first period of settlement and Christianisation, which was very intensively pursued by the Passau Abbey, most of the municipal area was reclaimed.
Considering the area's ties to Passau, it is not surprising that the village was first mentioned in a Passau document from 1245. A "Dominus Karolus de Alkenperge" appears as the penultimate witness to the confirmation document of Bishop Rüdiger of Passau on 31 October 1245 concerning the enfeoffment of Grundacker III of Steyr with the dominion of Wildberg. Just three years later, however, the place name "Altenperge" can also be found in a Passau document.
