Cross-country skiing in Großgollern

One of them is Johann Thaller from Pischelsdorf, who Tips visited following a tip from an enthusiastic cross-country skier from Munderfing. Because what is still rather unknown is that the 64-year-old creates a small winter sports paradise in the Großgollern district every year - snow conditions permitting - with a great deal of dedication. And he has been doing so for 20 years. Although he didn't actively practise the sport himself back then, he always had the idea of building a cross-country ski trail, he explains. He finally realised his idea with trackers and a small snow groomer. "I started with a longer, more challenging trail," he explains, "but it soon became clear that people would rather do shorter laps."

Classic and skating

Today, cross-country skiers can enjoy their sport on a 2.6-kilometre circuit. In addition to a four-track classic trail, there is also a perfectly groomed piste for skating. "You have to offer people something," says Thaller. Last summer, he built himself a new track groomer for easier grooming, which he pulls behind a Ski-Doo. This allows him to prepare the trail even when there isn't quite as much snow - but it has to be at least ten centimetres. He invests a total of around two days a week in grooming and reworking. However, the preparation already begins in autumn, when the route has to be marked out and levelled. For him, it's a hobby and a passion.

Sport for everyone

For Thaller, cross-country skiing is the ideal everyday winter sport that anyone can do. "It doesn't matter how fast you are. The focus is on exercise in the fresh air," he emphasises. Anyone interested is welcome on the trail at any time. For more information, call Johann Thaller on 0660/3861560.
