The Taferlklaussee lake lies at the northern foot of the Höllengebirge mountains in the municipality of Altmünster, covers an area of around 1.5 hectares, and is located at an altitude of 763 meters. The Taferlklause was built in 1716 when the Aurachbach stream had to be dammed in order to use it for timber rafting with the Klauswehr weir. The dam was not abandoned, but continued to be used as a fishing lake.
The Taferlklaussee can be circumnavigated in about half an hour on a well-maintained hiking trail, offering a constant view of the lake. Hiking trails also lead further to the Hochlecken and the Hochleckenhaus, to the Kienklause and on to the Attersee. On the other side, the Froschweg trail leads to the Hinterer Langbathsee, and well-developed hiking trails take you all the way to Altmünster on the Traunsee.
Echo blowing at Taferlklaussee has a long tradition and takes place annually on August 15. Several groups of wind players use the echo of the Höllengebirge mountains and take turns playing tunes, yodels, and folk songs across the lake.
