In an age where psychological, organisational and socio-political issues immediately take centre stage as soon as Christian churches are discussed, a work of art that in no way intends to intervene in the current debates is highly topical insofar as the central theme of Christian preaching, the Passion, becomes the subject of dramatic debate.

In contrast to the Baroque Passion oratorios, F. Ch. Zauner's text is certainly in keeping with the Gospel, as it adheres to the traditional facts, but it unrolls such a colourful and psychologically penetrating picture of the contemporary historical context that a historical tragedy is added to the mystery drama of the Passion. The main characters are Pilate, his wife, the apostle Peter and a couple from the people added to the biblical tradition.
