Man with the sun

The fountain is hewn from granite, made by Hans Getzinger from Haslach an der Mühl, who at that time did all the stone work for Schlägl Abbey.
The fountain is a simple, six-sided Renaissance work; its ornament is the fountain figure, an old man carved from white marble by the Linz sculptor Johann Spaz, holding the sun in his hand. The old man is the first abbot of Schlägl Abbey, who presided over its fortunes from 1626-1665. On the one hand, he symbolises his name, Greysing-Greis, and on the other, his government programme, which, after the turmoil of the Reformation and the Peasants' Wars, made the sun rise again over our region.
This fountain stood in the large courtyard of Schlägl Abbey from 1628 to 1858. After the fire of 1850, when they started to extend the tract above the brewery and added an arcade to the wall, on which the corridor of the upper floor was to rest, the fountain was no longer in the middle, it no longer fitted harmoniously into the monastery courtyard, so it was removed and donated to the owners. Since then, the fountain has stood in the market square of Aigen-Schlägl, an ornament to the square and a monument to times gone by.
Only open to visitors during the summer months! From the beginning of winter it gets a "winter dress".
