Making a dugout was not an everyday occurrence. That it had something meaningful in itself and in a larger circle was noticed, emerges from the associated customs. The reason for this is the importance of the dugout for the life of the people on the lake, which was always an important source of food for them, then in an unconscious awe of the tree giant, and finally, the fact that the work required a special skill, Which had been inherited from earlier times and which few controlled. For this the blessing of the Lord was requested, and this was a sociable and cheerful custom. Well thought-out and prepared, all the work was planned and planned in the long term. The construction of the dug-out ("Schöff") took place according to ancient, traditional forms and methods of work and with a special tool.
