The Taferlklause Forest Soil Nature Trail along the Taferlklaussee in Altmünster provides engaging information about forest soil, forest habitats, and protective forests. Revitalized information panels, audio podcasts, and supplementary online information make this loop trail in the Attersee-Traunsee Nature Park an informative nature experience for anyone interested in forests and nature. The Taferlklause Forest Soil Nature Trail along the Taferlklaussee in the municipality of Altmünster was established in 2008 by the Federal Research Center for Forests (BFW), which also includes the Traunkirchen Forestry Training Center. Since then, the nature trail has established itself as a vivid place for learning and discovery: several thousand course participants and students have already visited it as part of training courses. In addition, numerous visitors enjoy the loop trail in their free time.
In the spring of 2026, the informational signs were revitalized through a collaboration between the State of Upper Austria, the municipality of Altmünster, and the BFW, and updated with current information on the topic of protective forests. The loop trail around the lake is located in the heart of the Attersee-Traunsee Nature Park and is open to all interested visitors.
Along the nature trail, visitors gain fascinating insights into the forest floor. The interpretive panels explain how the soils at each forest site are structured, what characteristics they possess, and what significance they hold for the forest. It becomes particularly clear that the forest floor—alongside the climate—plays a key role in determining which tree species will be able to grow in Austria’s forests in the future.
The Forest Soil Nature Trail is aimed at forest owners, foresters, schools, nature enthusiasts, and anyone who would like to get to know the forest from a new perspective. The information panels are supplemented by audio podcasts and additional information available at www.bodenlehrpfad.at.
