Pfarrkirche zu Maria Himmelfahrt

Neukirchen an der Enknach, Oberösterreich, Österreich
The oldest Marian shrine in Upper Austria, the parish church "Maria Himmelfahrt" from 1430. The history of the church:

According to the oldest Bavarian document from the diocesan archives in Passau, Bishop Vivilo of Passau consecrated a Marian shrine here in 738 (or 739). Neukirchen was therefore home to the oldest Marian church in the country and one of the earliest sites of Christianity.

The existing church is a two-nave church with a star-ribbed vault and was built in 1430 in the Gothic style by the Burghausen master builder Oswald Bürckel.
On the north side stands the 73 metre high church tower with its pointed spire, which points upwards like a mighty index finger. There are some valuable artistic treasures in the church that are well worth a visit.
A fresco depicting the Last Judgement is located on the left wall of the presbytery.
Above the main entrance hangs a wood-carved death shield of the supreme and last lord of Neukirchen and Untereitzing and the inscriptions by Jakob du Puich on the choir stalls, as well as the four gravestones next to the side altars, refer to the various owners of Neukirchen Castle.
Of the original Gothic furnishings, only the centrepiece of an altar depicting the death of Mary remains. A crucifix on the southern choir wall dates from around 1500.
The crucifixion group on the eastern outer wall is attributed to the workshop of the Landshut sculptor Hans Leinberger (around 1530).
Around 1665, the Gothic interior was replaced by Baroque works of art, which have been preserved to this day - with a few changes. The new organ was consecrated in 2009.

The parish church's nativity scene, the oldest parts of which date back to around 1730, is remarkable. It can be viewed during the Christmas period (until 2 February) with changing depictions.
The Sebastiani Chapel (plague chapel) was probably built in 1771 as a round house at the north-east corner of the cemetery instead of a charnel house. It currently serves as a funeral parlour.
