Hochmoor "Spiaßmoia"

St. Johann am Walde, Oberösterreich, Österreich
Very few "Saiga Hanser" know that there are also real moors in the municipality of St. Johann. All of these peat formations are associated with spring water and can therefore be described as spring moors. Although these areas are usually only a few hundred square metres in size, they are also home to typical and consistently rare plants and animals.
For example, the "carnivorous" round-leaved sundew, narrow-leaved cotton grass and various types of peat moss can be found in all areas. Special features of the "Spiaßmoia" include marsh gentian and - unfortunately only a few - specimens of the highly endangered lung gentian; arnica and swallow-wort gentian have also been found here.
According to tradition, the first settlers, the three Spiaßmoier farmers, lived in the "Spiaßmoia". They must have enjoyed great prestige, as the parish church in Höhnhart at the time was only allowed to "ring the bell" when the farmers' tall red hats were in sight.
The parish of St. Johann therefore has the hats of the Spiaßmoier farmers on its coat of arms alongside the symbols for the church saint and the beech forest that once dominated the area.
